FRESNO, Calif. – Members of the Hispanic community had a special opportunity to learn about the complicated word of business Thursday. A long like at the Mexican Consulate in Fresno during The California State Board of Equalization’s first ever Spanish Small Business Seminar.
Sandra Valenzuela opened her own cell phone store just over a year ago. The Madera business owner spent her morning learning information you can’t put a price on.
“I am learning a lot about income taxes and tax information. Also some taxes I didn’t know about before,” she said.
English is her second language which can make doing business challenging.
David Preciado of the Mexican Consulate says Hispanic businesses are vital to California’s financial health.
“In California more than 35% of small business are owned by Hispanics so I think we are going the right way and creating a lot of jobs,” said Preciado.
Leann Gouveia with the State Board of Equalization says today is all about breaking language barriers.
“We want to make sure that they have all the information to help them, especially in these changing times,” she said.
And the current political climate made today’s resources even more necessary.
“We want to alleviate the fear of dealing with state agencies. The political thing is going to be there whether or not we are there,” said Gouveia,
