Sony Xperia Z5 Reportedly Receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update

Sony has reportedly started seeding the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to its latest flagship model, the Xperia Z5 smartphone. To recall, the handset launched with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box.

The OTA firmware update is said to have started reaching Sony Xperia Z5 handsets in Turkey and will soon reach the Xperia Z5 Compact and the Xperia Z5 Premium models. The update was finalised for the three handsets almost three weeks ago, as per a Facebook post made by Sony Xperia Turkey fan page (via GSMArena). The post features an image showing the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, and the Xperia Z3+ along with their Android update statuses. While the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the Xperia Z5 handsets is seen as ‘Finalised’, the update for the Xperia Z3+ is in ‘Final Stage’.

Sony is yet to officially confirm the rollout details of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the Xperia Z5 handsets. The company support page still shows Android 5.1 Lollipop as the latest OS version for the Xperia Z5.

Sony last week confirmed that the Xperia M4 Aqua, which came with Android 5.0 Lollipop, will be skipping the Android 5.1 Lollipop update and will directly receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow. However, no time frame was given.

To refresh, Android 6.0 Marshmallow (previously just Android M) brings features such as revamped app permissions; Google Now on Tap feature; Android Pay mobile payment system, and new fingerprint APIs for developers among others.

The company last week also rolled out Android 5.1 Lollipop update to the Xperia M5, and the Xperia M5 Dual. In addition, the Xperia C4 and the Xperia C5 Ultra also received Android 5.1 Lollipop update last month.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update started rolling out in March last year, starting with Nexus devices. The OS version brings stability and performance improvements. With the new OS version, Google added new features such as support for multiple SIM cards, Device Protection and HD voice on compatible devices.
